The investigation revealed that over 200 works of art and valuable objects were stolen from the church and other rooms of the monumental complex. The stolen goods included reliquary busts, chandeliers, crucifixes, paintings, marble shelves, organs, candlesticks, vases, ornaments and other objects of great historical and artistic value.

A careful reconstruction

Thanks to careful archival research and a comparison between the current state of the church and period photos, the Carabinieri and art historians of the Girolamini have drawn up a detailed list of the missing works. The list includes both works for which a photo is available and goods for which only a description is available.

Activation of recovery procedures

The operation, carried out in implementation of a memorandum of understanding between the Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples and the Monumental Complex and Library of the Girolamini, has allowed the procedures for the recovery of the stolen goods to be started.

All the missing works will be entered into the database of illegally stolen cultural assets, and the Carabinieri of the TPC will thus be able to proceed with targeted investigations to find them.

A hard blow to cultural heritage

The theft of the Church of the Girolamini represents a severe blow to the Italian cultural heritage. It is a significant loss for the history and art of our country, which requires constant commitment to the recovery and enhancement of the stolen goods.

The complete list of stolen works, including photos and descriptions, is available at the Carabinieri Tpc Command and the Monumental Complex of the Girolamini.

The hope of a discovery
