Sessa Aurunca. Work is in full swing at the Garigliano nuclear power plant, in the municipality of Sessa Aurunca, for the construction of the new temporary storage facility for radioactive waste DT2. The current phase involves the installation of the foundation slab for the new structure.
The temporary repository will be responsible for safely storing approximately 1.800 cubic meters of low- and medium-level radioactive waste.
These wastes originate solely from the decommissioning activities of the Campania plant, which began in December 2023, and specifically from the disassembly of the systems and components inside the reactor building. The waste will then be transferred to the National Repository once it is available.
Technical characteristics of the warehouse
The DT2 depot, designed according to the most modern international standards, will be rectangular in shape, measuring 70 by 18 meters and 13 meters high, for a total volume of approximately 16.500 cubic meters. It will house:
An operational area dedicated to materials handling;
A service body for the operation of the depot;
A storage area equipped with an overhead crane for lifting and remote positioning of containers radioactive wasteThis area will also be equipped with corridors to allow for container inspection.
Timeline of works
The construction activities of the DT2 depot are expected to be completed by June 2025. This will be followed by testing and commissioning, scheduled for the first half of 2026.
