Naples. “An indelible mark of ignominy on the conscience of the Di Lauro clan”. This is how the anti-mafia prosecutor of Naples Maurizio De Marco defined the murder of Gelsomina Verde, during the closing speech at the trial that sees in the dock two members of the commando that kidnapped and killed her in 2004, during the first Scampia feud.

For Luigi De Lucia and Pasquale Rinaldi, alias “o Vichingo”, arrested on July 27, 2023, the prosecutor has requested a 30-year prison sentence.
The reconstruction of the crime
According to the investigators' reconstruction, Gelsomina Verde was forcibly taken from her home and taken to the place where she would later be murdered. Three people took part in the kidnapping: one sat in the passenger side of her car, while the other two defendants, in possession of the murder weapon, followed Gelsomina's car to the place of execution. Here, the girl was killed by gunshots by Ugo De Lucia.
A fatal mistake
The motive for the murder would have been a tragic mistake. The Di Lauro criminal group believed, erroneously, that Jasmine knew where Gennaro Notturno, known as “'o sarracino”, a rival of the clan, was hiding. The girl, however, was completely unaware of this information and denied knowing anything about it.
The hitmen, however, did not believe her and decided to eliminate her. Only after the murder did they realize they had made a grave mistake and, in an attempt to cover their tracks, they set fire to the victim's car with her body inside.
An attempt at redemption
Cosimo Di Lauro, son of Paolo, known as “Ciruzzo 'o milionario”, who died in prison a few years ago, offered 300 thousand euros to Gelsomina's family in an attempt to wash away the stain that the murder had left on the conscience of the clan.
The request for conviction
Prosecutor De Marco has requested that De Lucia and Rinaldi be sentenced to 30 years in prison for aggravated murder, kidnapping and destruction of a corpse. The trial is underway at the Court of Assizes of Naples.
A case that shocked Italy
The murder of Gelsomina Verde, a 16-year-old student, on November 16, 2004, shocked Italy. Her story has also found space in the television adaptation and in particular in the fiction Gomorrah.
The Naples news in recent years has repeatedly told the story of the girl killed by a tragic mistake: her death has become a living symbol of the brutality of the Camorra. The ongoing trial is an opportunity to shed light on this brutal crime and to obtain justice for the young victim.
