The Council of Ministers, acting on a proposal from Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, approved a reasoned resolution authorizing the adoption of the draft Prime Ministerial Decree suspending Professor Enrico Coscioni, President of the National Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas).

Coscioni, 62, originally from Pagani, in the province of Salerno, was appointed health advisor by the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, in 2015, and in October 2020 he also became president of Agenas, a four-year term that expires in four months.

For several months, the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office has been accusing Coscioni of being responsible for the death of a patient undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery: the autopsy revealed that during the operation, a piece of gauze had been left inside the man's body, causing his death.

Coscioni investigated for patient's death

The piece of cloth was identified and recovered during the autopsy. In March, the judge ordered Coscioni to be banned from practicing medicine for 12 months, which also included his suspension from the leadership of the Cardiac Surgery Department at the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona Hospital in Salerno, where the case at the center of the investigation occurred.

However, the investigating judge denied the prosecutors' request to also suspend him from his role as president of Agenas, a decision confirmed in May by the preliminary investigations court.
