Ilaria Salis is free and will soon return to Italy. This morning, the Hungarian police went to her home in Budapest, where she was serving house arrest, to inform her of the recognition of her new status as an MEP. At the same time, the authorities removed the electronic bracelet that monitored her movements and notified her of her release.
The family of the newly elected member of the European Parliament for the Alliance of the Greens and the Left (AVS) is hastily organizing the return trip to Italy, an unexpected event but welcomed with great joy. The news was released by sources close to the family of Ilaria Salis. “Let's celebrate her birthday at home, I'll go pick her up and take her home myself”, said Roberto Salis, commenting on the release of his daughter Ilaria, who will be able to return to Italy after 16 months of detention in Hungary. On Monday, Ilaria Salis will celebrate her 40th birthday together with her loved ones.
“I am very happy,” added Roberto Salis, “I am trying to organize the return as quickly as possible. I worked quietly but we did not expect her to be released today. Instead, lawyer Magyar called me to tell me that the police were on their way to free her. And now I am going to get her.”
