An 87-year-old pensioner from Caserta attempted to kill his 78-year-old wife in Pedara, in the province of Catania, during a violent argument that broke out on Friday afternoon.
The man, a former railway employee, first attempted to shoot the woman with a pistol, which jammed. He then struck her in the head with the butt of the gun, and when she managed to disarm him, he attacked her with his walking stick and attempted to strangle her.
The woman's screams alerted neighbors, who intervened and saved her from the worst. The man was arrested by Carabinieri officers who responded to the scene.

At the root of the crazy act, as reported by the news program of the local broadcaster ReiTv, there were apparently old financial grudges between the couple, who lived in the same house but in separate rooms.
The woman was taken to the hospital in Acireale for treatment, while the 87-year-old was arrested for attempted murder and receiving stolen firearms. The man is currently under house arrest in a secure facility.
The couple's daughters, who live with their parents, were not present at home at the time of the attack.
