The annual turnover attributable to undeclared work in Italy amounts to approximately €68 billion. This is according to a study based on ISTAT data by the Mestre-based CGIA (Italian National Institute of Statistics), which finds that approximately 35% of this added value generated by the underground economy is attributable to the southern regions.
The system, CGIA estimates, involves just under 3 million people in the country; again, Southern Italy is the geographical area with the highest percentage, 37,2% of the total.
