The class council of the Visconti high school in Rome has decided to sanction the final year students responsible for the "trophy girls list" posted on their classroom door.
The boys will receive a 6 in conduct and a “symbolic” six-day suspension, which will be transformed into a training activity with Telefono Rosa.
Mario Rusconi, president of the National Association of Principals of Rome, commented: “It's good that measures have been taken, even if a 6 in conduct has a minimal influence on school credit. With a 5, on the contrary, they would not have been admitted to the final exams.”
Gabriella Carnieri Muscatels, president of Telefono Rosa, declared: "We cannot help but be shocked by the news of the list. Treating your companions as conquests and trophies highlights the drift of our society. As Telefono Rosa, we have long been asking the institutions to support us in the education and training projects for young people.
We need to open a dialogue with them. Yet, we have always found ourselves alone in carrying out these initiatives. After learning the news, we were contacted by the Visconti High School to organize a meeting with the students, not only with the perpetrators of the gesture but also with their peers.
We have given our maximum availability and our professionals will be in the classroom starting next week. We are happy that the institute has recognized the seriousness of the gesture. This reassures us and gives us hope.
We can only condemn the behavior, but we are ready to work with the and students to make them understand what they have done. They must understand that acts like this feed the chauvinistic and patriarchal culture that we must defeat. The only way to do this is to open a dialogue, raise awareness and inform.
Let's start with the young people to reverse the culture. We have always believed in it and for this reason we will do everything possible to put our professionalism and our knowledge into play."
The meeting with the Pink Telephone
The meeting with Telefono Rosa will be held starting next week and will involve the students who committed the act, their peers and their peers. The goal is to raise awareness among the kids on the issues of gender respect, the fight against sexism and violence against women.
A warning against chauvinistic culture
The Visconti high school episode is a warning against the chauvinistic and patriarchal culture that is still too widespread in our society. It is important that schools and institutions commit to educating young people about mutual respect and gender equality.
