Thirty years after Massimo Troisi's passing, Naples remembers him with affection and admiration. In a video published on the ANCI website for the column "It happened in the city", the mayor Gaetano Manfredi and the maestro Renzo Arbore draw a moving portrait of the artist who passed away too soon.
Manfredi defines Troisi "the symbol of a painful but disenchanted Neapolitanness, capable of denying all the stereotypes that have always affected our city". It highlights his extraordinary ability to tell the world with irony and disenchantment, unmasking the clichés that often plague society. "To overcome prejudice", concludes the mayor, "we must use the very powerful weapons of irony, just as Troisi taught us."
Arbore, however, remembers Troisi as "the other Naples," comparing him to other great artists like Pino Daniele. He recounts their partnership, born thanks to the trio with Lello Arena and Enzo Decaro, and the deep friendship that bound them. "Massimo wasn't someone who liked being in the spotlight.", confides Arbore, "but I often convinced him to go out, to go to the theatre or to concerts."

The two friends also retrace their experiences in the world of cinema. Arbore recalls attending the preview of "I'll start again from three", fearing that the public would not understand the film. "Instead", tells, "After just a few minutes I understood that it was a masterpiece". And it is precisely to that film that Arbore attributes the credit for having brought luck to Troisi, launching him towards huge success.
The words of Manfredi and Arbore are a moving tribute to an artist who left an indelible mark on Italian culture.
