Manocalzati. A sacrilegious theft has shocked the small community of Manocalzati, 3.000 inhabitants on the hills a few kilometers from Avellino.
On the night between June 7th and 8th, unknown assailants stole the treasure of San Marco, the town's patron saint. The stolen gold is believed to be worth inestimable amounts.
According to initial reports, a gang of specialists entered the church after forcing a side entrance to the sacristy. Once inside, the criminals headed for the safe containing the treasure. After disabling the alarm using a code, they cut it open with a flexi saw and stole all its contents.
The discovery and the shock of the community
The theft was discovered this morning shortly after 8:00 a.m. by an assistant of the parish priest, Father Roberto Cancilleri. The news spread quickly throughout the village, and the entire community was left in shock.
The treasure of San Marco was a precious piece of Manocalzati's history and tradition, and its theft represents a hard blow for the town.
Investigations ongoing
On the spot were attended by i police of the Scientific Nucleus of the Provincial Command of Avellino who have started investigations to identify those responsible and recover the stolen treasure. The Public Prosecutor's Office of Avellino has opened a file against unknown persons.
