Carabinieri from the Castellammare di Stabia Company arrested a man and seized several plants of "purple weed," a variety of marijuana highly sought after by Generation Z youth, during a raid in the Lattari Mountains, also known as the "Italian Jamaica."
The operation was made possible thanks to the use of a drone, which allowed the Carabinieri to identify a man red-handed while growing drugs.
The man, Catello Battimello, a 68-year-old from Sant'Antonio Abate already known to the police, was arrested and taken to prison. Subsequent searches led to the seizure of 15 plants of "purple weed", about 80 meters tall, in full bloom.
Purple weed, a dangerous drug
“Purple weed”, also called “purple haze” like the famous song by Jimi Hendrix, is a variety of marijuana which owes its purple colour to the high concentration of anthocyanins.
This variety of the drug is considered more dangerous than traditional marijuana because it contains higher levels of THC, the psychoactive principle of cannabis.
The seizure of these “purple weed” plants is a worrying sign because it shows how drug producers like Battimello are trying to keep up with the times and new market demands.
