A complex and timely rescue operation took place yesterday evening on the Sorrento Peninsula, in Massa Lubrense (Naples). A Roman hiker, who left from Punta Campanella with the intention of reaching the Bay of Ieranto, lost his way and ended up in a dangerous situation close to a cliff.
Disoriented and frightened, the man called the attention of a nearby vessel with loud cries. The crew of the vessel promptly notified a FAI official present in the area, who immediately alerted 118 and the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS) of Campania.
The technicians of the Alpine rescue and Speleological immediately took action, also involving the Coast Guard for a joint intervention. A Coast Guard patrol boat left Capri with a CNSAS technician on board, who managed to locate the hiker and provided the team by land with the exact coordinates of his position.
The CNSAS team, with the help of a local expert Civil Protection volunteer, reached the hiker. With darkness now approaching, it was necessary to request the intervention of the 118 Naples helicopter rescue service. The CNSAS helicopter rescuer, once on site, lowered himself from the helicopter to recover the hiker, then transporting him to the Ospedale del Mare in Naples for the necessary treatment.
