00. Inspired by Caravaggio's painting "The Taking of Christ," recently exhibited at Palazzo Ricca, the exhibition presents a selection of documents from the Historical Archives of the Banco Napoli, the State Archives, and the Archives of the Real Monte Manso di Scala, along with eight photographs. These materials offer a unique insight into the places and people who interacted with Caravaggio throughout his career.

Naples and Caravaggio: an indissoluble bond

Naples represented a pivotal moment in Caravaggio's life and artistic output. The exhibition offers a journey through the places and figures who played a significant role in the artist's life, such as the "Locanda del Cerriglio," the site of an attack on the artist, and figures such as Geronimo Mastrillo, Tommaso de Franchis, and Giovan Battista Manso, known for their patronage.

Unpublished documents and photographs

Many of the documents on display are previously unpublished and have been interpreted by the project's founding scholars, such as Luigi Abetti, Gloria Guida, Sabrina Iorio, Bianca Stranieri, and Andrea Zappulli. They are joined by young talents such as Annalisa Davide, Pasquale Esposito, Simona Landi, and Luigi Mango. Federica Gioffredi is the talented photographer who interpreted the documentary content through evocative black-and-white shots, using natural light. The result is a "timeless" perspective that creates a magical connection between documents and monuments.
