Naples. Separate waste collection in Naples has exceeded 40% and stands, according to Ispra 2022 data, at around 43%. An important result that places the Neapolitan city above Rome in terms of percentage of separated waste.
This goal was achieved thanks to the joint efforts of several organizations: CONAI, Asia Napoli, the VI Municipality, and, above all, the citizens of Naples, who demonstrated great participation in the change.
"A model to follow," as underlined by Fabio Costarella, Deputy Director of Conai, speaking at the Green Med Symposium underway at the Mostra d'Oltremare.
The success of Municipality VI, where the quantities of packaging, paper, and cardboard intercepted doubled, is a clear example. The key was the collaboration and active participation of all stakeholders involved, avoiding top-down impositions.
Campania: lights and shadows
While in Naples recycling has made a leap forward, the situation in Campania is more varied. The percentage of waste sorted at a regional level stands at 54%, stable compared to previous years. A figure that is not very exciting, especially when compared to the constant growth recorded in packaging collection.
According to Costarella, this stalemate is due to the fact that the share of packaging in urban waste is still too low compared to other flows, such as the organic fraction.
However, it's worth noting that in 2023, over 400 tons of waste were sent for recycling in Campania, generating an economic return of nearly €58 million for virtuous municipalities. These valuable resources can help improve waste management and lower rates for residents.
A commitment to the future
The data presented at the Green Med Symposium offer food for thought and a warning for the future. On the one hand, Naples represents a model to follow for its effective management of waste collection differentiated, on the other hand, Campania as a whole must do more to achieve the objectives set.
The commitment of all stakeholders, from institutions to businesses to citizens, will be crucial to further improving the situation and making Campania a more virtuous region in terms of waste management.
