Naples. More foreign ships have been stopped in the port of Naples by the rigorous controls of the Port Authority's PSC Unit, led by Admiral Pietro Vella.

A first vessel, a Panamanian-flagged chemical-oil tanker, built in 2001 and of approximately 37.000 tons, was stopped for failing to comply with international navigation safety standards.

The second, a general cargo ship loaded with ferrous materials, flying the Palau flag and built in 1991, had already been reported by the ITF (International Transport Workers' Federation) for failing to comply with international regulations regarding living and working conditions on board.

Following the inspections, the Coast Guard confirmed the ITF's complaints and stopped the vessel due to the serious deficiencies found, not only regarding working conditions but also navigation safety.

On this occasion, the inspectors facilitated the repatriation of an Azerbaijani seafarer who, due to the precarious living conditions on board, had long expressed the desire to disembark.

With this arrest, the number of ships stopped in the port of Naples since the beginning of 2024 rises to five, demonstrating the constant commitment of the port authorities in ensuring the safety of navigation, the protection of the marine environment and the safeguarding of seafarers' rights.

Admiral Vella's words:

"The enforcement activity of the PSC Unit of the Port Authority of Naples continues unabated. Our commitment is to ensure navigational safety, protect the marine environment, and safeguard seafarers' rights. We will not hesitate to detain any vessel found to be in breach of international regulations."
