Naples tons of waste buried in the former Suarez area at Camaldoli: businessman arrested

Naples. A construction contractor has been placed under house arrest for an environmental disaster in Naples: 250 tons of waste were buried in a former quarry. The Carabinieri investigation, conducted by the Local Police, is underway.

The man, BS, already known to law enforcement for similar incidents, is accused of illegally burying large quantities of waste, including asbestos, in the disused Suarez quarry within the Metropolitan Park of the Hills of Naples.

The investigation, conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office - Section V "Environment, Building, Urban Planning" and supported by findings from ARPA Campania and technical advice from an environmental geologist, revealed that the entrepreneur, over the years, has built a veritable illegal landfill inside the former Suarez quarry.

It is estimated that the man illegally disposed of between 146.000 and 176.000 cubic meters of waste, equivalent to approximately 250.000 tons, including significant quantities of crushed asbestos. To give an idea of the scale of the devastation, consider that the volume of waste disposed of is equivalent to a building 90 meters by 90 meters and 7-8 stories high.

The illegal dumping operation caused serious pollution in the area and put the health of a considerable number of people at risk, given that it is a densely populated area.

In addition to house arrest, the entrepreneur's trucks and earthmoving equipment were seized, and one of his companies, a beneficiary of his illegal activities, was banned from operating.

The preventive seizure amounts to approximately one million euros.

The entrepreneur had already been sent to trial for failure to reclamation of the same quarry, ordered by both the Municipality of Naples and the criminal judge, and had already suffered a seizure of three million euros for not having provided for the restoration of the area for at least five years.
