Naples. One year and two months in prison for manslaughter: this is the sentence handed down by Naples' sole judge, Franco Napoli, to three surgeons at Cardarelli Hospital.
Doctors have been held responsible for the death of Nunzia Nobis, a 43-year-old mother of three who died in June 2020 following surgery for kidney stones.
During the operation, performed laparoscopically by surgeons Clemente Meccariello and Andrea Oliva, the patient's inferior vena cava was lacerated, causing severe bleeding.
A third surgeon, Paolo Fedelini, intervened later, but despite two further operations performed on the same day, the bleeding could not be stopped and the woman died.
Nunzia Nobis' family welcomed the sentence with satisfaction
The family of Nunzia Nobis, who joined the trial as a civil party assisted by the lawyer Mario Griffo, welcomed the sentence, which now paves the way for the recognition of compensation for the tragic event.
