Naples Compact Disc Scam: The New Elderly Deception Technique

Naples. The compact disc scam is coming: it is the new technique to extort money from the elderly. No longer at home with the phone call of the fake grandson but approached on the street in the shopping streets.

The Carabinieri of the Naples Center Company arrested a 47-year-old on charges of aggravated fraud against the elderly. The man, already known to the police, was acting in conjunction with an accomplice who has not yet been identified.

The investigation, coordinated by the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, revealed that the two scammers approached the elderly on the street, pretending to be employees of a computer store. With the excuse of having to deliver compact discs to their children, they convinced the victims to give them money, obtaining an unfair profit.

The scams all took place in the Chiaia neighborhood. The 47-year-old and his accomplice allegedly approached a 74-year-old man on the street, introducing themselves as employees of a computer store. They then claimed they had to deliver two “compact discs” to the victim’s son, one worth 150 euros, the other 200.

After having defrauded the elderly man, they would have collected the requested sum. Same script, different victims, in 4 other similar episodes.

After staging the story of the compact disc, the 81-year-old allegedly snatched two 47 euro notes from the hands of one of the victims, an 50-year-old. For this he will also be charged with theft by snatching.

In one case, an 81-year-old was also robbed of two 50-euro notes after the scammers snatched the notes from his hands.

The arrested man, MDV, was locked up in the Poggioreale prison. He will answer for fraud aggravated and theft by snatching.
