On World Oceans Day, Marevivo renewed its thirty-year commitment to recovering human waste and abandoned fishing gear at sea. The latest operation took place in the waters of the Phlegraean Archipelago, at Punta Pizzaco on the island of Procida, within the "Regno di Nettuno" Marine Protected Area. Among the items recovered were a large-mesh fishing net, a bicycle, and a net hauler, all long abandoned on the seabed.
The project, completed last Saturday, was made possible thanks to the collaboration with Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale SB, a certified B Corp©, and the supervision of the Port Authority and the Municipality of Procida, coordinated by Commander Fabiola Ratano. Also participating were the "Regno di Nettuno" MPA, the Carabinieri divers of Naples, ANS Diving Ischia, Stabiae Diving, the Acqua VET company, and the Caplem company.
During the operation, which involved 10 Marevivo divers in collaboration with Carabinieri divers, hundreds of meters of ghost nets were removed, totaling over 1000 kg of nets and other abandoned human waste. The recovery was facilitated by the use of 20 lifting balloons and a pontoon.
Lost or abandoned fishing gear on the seabed is a serious problem. According to the General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean (FAO), 70% of waste entering the marine ecosystem sinks, while plastic makes up 92% of the waste found on the seabed. Furthermore, fishing debris accounts for over 27% of marine debris.
