Il Real Madrid won his 15th Champions League, overcoming Borussia Dortmund with a hard-fought 2-0.
The victory also marks a record for Carlo Ancelotti, who achieved his fifth triumph as a coach in the competition, his seventh personal. The first half was dominated by the Germans, with Courtois decisive for Real Madrid. The Belgian goalkeeper made a great save on Adeyemi, saw Fullkrug hit the post (suspected offside) and made important saves on Adeyemi and Sabitzer. Bellingham looked disoriented, Kroos isolated and imprecise, while Camavinga struggled and the Madrid defence was under pressure. The referee was also criticised for booking Schlotterbeck and Sabitzer for justified protests.
In the second half, Real Madrid showed an improvement over the first 49 minutes. A great free kick from Kroos was deflected into a corner by Kobel, and from the subsequent corner came a cross that Carvajal sent just over the bar. It was Carvajal who broke the deadlock with a header from another corner taken by Kroos. Bellingham missed the opportunity to double the lead, but Vinicius found the winner in the dying seconds.
Ancelotti, in his fifth Champions League, told Sky: "It's very nice but the quantity doesn't matter. The desire is to spend evenings like this. This second stage in Madrid seems like a dream, let's hope we don't wake up". Regarding the match, the coach admitted: “Never get used to it, because it was difficult, very difficult and more than expected. In the first half we were a bit lazy, we lost some balls and they played as they wanted. In the second half we were better, more balanced”.
Ancelotti dedicated a special thought to president Florentino Pérez: “He was very happy. That’s the key to all this: today he surpasses Bernabeu, another legend? Many compliments to him, he is a great president”. On Kroos' possible retirement after the European Championship in Germany, Ancelotti added: “The hug? He thanked me, he leaves after this match and I think it's hard for us to accept it. But he does it while lifting a Champions Cup. The cup in bed with me? No, tonight we won't sleep”.
