A fascinating blue-walled shrine has been discovered in Pompeii, in the central area of ​​the ancient city. The discovery, made during excavations in Insula 10 of Regio IX, offers a new insight into the daily life and religious beliefs of ancient Pompeians.

The shrine, which measures approximately 8 square metres, has walls painted in an intense blue, a colour rarely used in Pompeian frescoes and usually reserved for rooms of particular decorative value.

Against this blue background stand out female figures representing the four seasons, the Horae, and allegories of agriculture and pastoralism.

Symbols and rituals

The presence of these symbols indicates that the shrine was likely dedicated to deities associated with nature and fertility. Everyday objects were also found inside, such as transport amphorae, jugs, lamps, and fragments of plaster made from crushed oyster shells, used as building materials.

The shrine is part of a larger residential complex, which includes a thermal baths area still under excavation and a large frescoed hall with a staircase leading to the first floor. These finds testify to the evolution of this area over time and the richness of life in Pompeii before the tragic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

A valorization project

The excavation of the shrine and the entire neighborhood is part of a larger project to secure and enhance the archaeological heritage of Pompeiii. The goal is to make this extraordinary site accessible to the public and to ensure its preservation for future generations. This Pompeii heritage (more than 13 rooms in 1070 residential units, in addition to public and sacred spaces) more effective and sustainable.
