Salerno. After yet another accident caused by a wild boar, which left a motorcyclist from Laureana Cilento seriously injured, Coldiretti Salerno is mobilizing to protest the uncontrolled invasion of wild boars and other wildlife.
According to an estimate by Coldiretti, packs cause €200 million in damage to crops each year. Added to this are the 170 road accidents resulting in deaths and injuries caused by wild animals, an 8% increase over the previous year, according to Coldiretti's analysis of ASAPS data.
In the province of Salerno the situation has been worrying for some time. Wild boars destroy crops of wheat, corn, grapes, potatoes and other crops; they invade roads especially at night, turning cities and towns upside down.
Furthermore, the boars They are the main vehicle for the spread of African swine fever, a disease harmless to humans but which threatens the survival of the national pork butcher's industry, a sector worth approximately 20 billion euros.
Current rules state that just one sick boar found miles from a stable is enough to trigger the decision to cull thousands of healthy pigs.

"The presence of wild boars isn't just a problem for farmers, but for everyone. And it's a problem that needs to be solved," emphasizes Ettore Bellelli, president of Coldiretti Campania and the province of Salerno.
"It's a veritable invasion that's spiraling out of control, a repeatedly reported emergency that has seen Coldiretti Salerno mobilize for days through the regional and provincial assemblies. The mobilization will culminate in a demonstration scheduled for the first half of July."
With the 2023 Budget Law, Article 19-ter of Law 157/1992 was introduced, which provides for the adoption of an "Extraordinary Plan for the Management and Containment of Wild Fauna."
"The Regional Implementation Plan is missing," explains Director Enzo Tropiano. "There's no more time to waste. Farmers and ranchers can no longer wait while wild boars continue to devastate the fruits of their hard work, leaving only damage and desolation in their wake.
This is why farmers and ranchers are ready to take to the roads again. The latest accident in Laureana Cilento shows that the problem can no longer be put off.
