Salerno. With the arrival of the summer season and the increase in beachgoers, the Salerno Police Headquarters has launched the operation "Safe Sea 2024", a plan for intensified controls along the Salerno coast to ensure safety and legality at sea.
The operation, ordered during a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety and the Technical Committee at the Police Headquarters, involves coastal patrols by police officers aboard jet skis.
The checks, carried out in collaboration with the Carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza, the Port Authority, and the Highway Police, focus on combating driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Carrying out checks
The patrols approach the boats at sea, in compliance with the safety and protection regulations for operators and citizens. In case of suspicion, an initial screening is carried out with a portable breathalyzer.
If the test is positive, the vessel is escorted ashore for further inspection, where personnel from the Highway Police and the Carabinieri will perform a breathalyzer test and, if necessary, suspend the license.
First weekend results
Last Saturday, during the first weekend of checks, 147 people and 8 boats were checked. In one case, an alcohol level above the permitted limit was found, resulting in the suspension of the license. In addition, two boats were fined for administrative violations.
Objective: Safety and legality at sea
Operation "Mare Sicuro 2024" will continue throughout the summer with the aim of ensuring the safety of swimmers and combating illegal behavior at sea, protecting the marine environment and ensuring everyone's safe enjoyment of the sea.
