Secondigliano. Tension erupted this morning in Secondigliano prison, where a foreign inmate, already known for his violent behavior and a repeat offender, attacked a prison police superintendent. The man attempted to slit his throat with a razor blade, wounding him in the neck.
The Superintendent was promptly rescued and taken to the hospital. He will have to undergo prophylaxis to avoid the risk of infectious diseases.
The incident sparked the ire of Si.NAPPe, the National Autonomous PolPen Union. The Deputy and Regional General Secretaries, Luigi Vargas and Pasquale Gallo, strongly denounce the incident and call for urgent interventions to protect the safety of prison workers.
"How is it possible that such a dangerous prisoner was not subjected to adequate measures to contain his violence?", Vargas wonders. "We can no longer tolerate our colleagues being attacked while carrying out their duties with professionalism and sacrifice."
Unionists are calling for tougher penalties and sanctions for those who attack prison officers, as well as greater use of measures such as exclusion from community activities, special surveillance, and transfers out of the region for the most violent inmates.
"Campania's prisons are collapsing", reports Gallo. "The overcrowding is unsustainable, and officers are under constant stress. It's a miracle that even more serious tragedies don't occur."
"Enough! We demand immediate action.", conclude Vargas and Gallo. "The safety of our colleagues and citizens cannot be questioned."
Si.NAPPe's requests:
- Greater protections for prison officers
Increased penalties for those who attack officers
Tougher measures for violent prisoners
Reducing overcrowding in prisons
The situation in the prisons bells is dramatic. Every day, prison officers are faced with situations of great danger. Urgent intervention by the authorities is necessary to ensure the safety of those who work in prisons and all citizens.
