The initiative of Pio Monte della Misericordia once again wants to renew its cultural and social mission in favor of people and young generations, they were proclaimed (yesterday Thursday 13 June 2024) in the Assembly Hall of the institution in via Tribunali.
Maria Grazia Leonetti Rodinò, art historian and former Governor of Cultural and Artistic Heritage of Pio Monte, creator and manager of the project, curated by Mario Codognato, announced the winners during the inauguration of the exhibition “Seven Works for Mercy” by the seven international artists who donated their work for the initiative.
The winners of this seventh edition are: Carmen Buonanno with Rotonda Diaz ore 12, Alessia Magri with Mother Roots, Yuliya Marych with La cura, Chiara Panunzio with Droni, Graziano Riccelli with Risonanza vitale il seme della generosità, Deborah Romero with Im dorfe and in ex aequo Andrea Canneva with Darealloggio ai Pellegrini and Ida Indaco with Abisso.
In addition to Maria Grazia Leonetti Rodinò, the proclamation ceremony was attended by Fabrizia Paternò di San Nicola, Superintendent of Pio Monte della Misericordia, Giuseppe Gaeta, Director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, Alberto Sifola, Governor of Pio Monte della Misericordia, Maria Cristina Antonini, painter, professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, responsible for prizes and competitions.
The students win a scholarship worth 1.000 euros each along with the prize of a training trip to the Venice Biennale.
The award was assigned by a jury composed of Maria Grazia Leonetti Rodinò, Maria Cristina Antonini, Angela Tecce, Alberto Sifola and Adriana De Manes, delegated by Giuseppe Gaeta.
The young artists, accompanied on the path by the coordination of Maria Cristina Antonini, who has followed the initiative and the works of the students since the beginning, were asked to create a work on the theme of mercy. The works of 23 students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples are exhibited in an exhibition, until June 20, on the first floor of the Quadreria del Palazzo in via Tribunali.
The young participating artists have chosen various techniques to interpret the theme of mercy and create their works: from oil painting or mixed techniques, to photography and linocut or xylography, up to assemblage works or sculptures with various materials such as marble, clay, wood or metal.
“This Project has the great merit of bringing together great, generous and sensitive artists who choose to give us their interpretation of Mercy and young talents full of dreams and creativity who will be the future of art and the future of our society. And this is the deepest meaning that we want to give to this initiative because young people have always been at the center of the social action of Pio Monte, young people who need to discover their talents, young people with different talents, young people who need support to realize their dreams and who through culture and love for beauty can grow and find their own way” – explained Fabrizia Paternò of San Nicola, Superintendent of Pio Monte della Misericordia.
The Seven Works for Mercy project developed in two parallel moments: the competition and the exhibition dedicated to young artistic talents, and the exhibition and donation of the works of seven great international contemporary artists, Beatrice Caracciolo, Edgar Honetschläger, Andrew Huston, Mariko Mori, Carsten Nicolai, Serena Scapagnini and Juergen Teller, which are on display until November 13, 2024.
“In 2011, with a happy intuition, we took the title of Caravaggio's work The Seven Works of Mercy and invited seven well-known artists to generously donate one of their works on the theme of mercy, and at the same time we would donate some scholarships to deserving students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples and the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella. The project focuses on two essential moments, absolutely inseparable and complementary: the 'donation' of a work of art by artists who have now reached the international elite, inspired by the theme of mercy, and which will remain inalienable forever in the Quadreria del Pio Monte, and with the same motivation, the 'donation' to the students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples of seven scholarships for works on the same theme, and their works will also remain acquired by Pio Monte” – declared Maria Grazia Leonetti Rodinò.
More than 420 years later, even today the Pio Monte della Misericordia is still working, with great expenditure of resources and energy, in the field of assistance and charity, the mission of its economic and cultural policy. It has placed its entire heritage, real estate, art and archives, at the service of its mandate, which therefore acquires a strong social value, becoming the instrument for carrying out works in favor of people and the community.
Over the years, Monte's commitment has expanded its range of action by participating in training and educational projects in collaboration with cultural institutes and academies.
Art, solidarity and support for the younger generations are in fact the cornerstones that have inspired the Seven Works for Mercy project for over thirteen years.
