The statements of Raffaele Imperiale, a repentant former drug trafficker, have brought to light the existence of an organized cartel that manages cocaine trafficking in Europe.
This cartel is made up of a small number of people capable of managing large quantities of drugs and dictating the rules of the European market.
The investigations, conducted by Italian and Dutch authorities, revealed that the cartel uses a network of contacts to source cocaine in South America and to land it in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and southern Italy.
Imperiale's revelations, as anticipated by the newspaper Il Mattino, also include details on murders and joint ventures between members of the cartel.
A key event was Daniel Kinahan’s wedding in Dubai in 2017, which was attended by many cartel figures to discuss business and make deals.
Among the names mentioned by Imperiale feature Daniel Kinahan, Ridouan Taghi, Edin Gacanin and Richard "El Rico" Riquelme Vega.
Imperiale's statements, along with the chats decrypted by law enforcement, represent an important step forward in the fight against drug trafficking in Europe.
