Autostrade per l'Italia is conducting an innovative experimental project aimed at improving road safety and reducing energy consumption through the implementation of an active 'grazing light' signage system. The pilot project, currently being tested on the Rome South Branch of theHighway A1, at the Torrenova junction, involves the installation of 41 LED projectors directly on the road barrier.
These devices, placed at a distance of 4,5 meters from each other and at a height of 0,9 cm from the ground, generate an optical guide that illuminates the contours of the road, increasing visibility and therefore safety on the motorway section. With a power of 16W, the LEDs are integrated inside the blade of the safety barrier on the slip road, offering greater energy efficiency than traditional pole lighting systems.
The 'grazing light' system aims to integrate existing lighting systems, ensuring uniform illumination of the roadway and providing greater visibility even in foggy conditions. Furthermore, thanks to its multifunctional nature, the system is able to communicate any traffic anomalies to motorists and promptly detect accidents on the road.
This technology, developed by Movyon and approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, represents a significant step forward in road safety, offering drivers a safer and more comfortable driving experience. The LEDs also act as warning lights, changing color to signal anomalies on the route, such as high-risk traffic sections or wrong directions, thus helping to reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall traffic flow.
