Yesterday was a tense day at the Secondigliano prison. A Roman inmate, held in the Adriatic ward, went berserk after a meeting, causing a disturbance and destroying thousands of euros' worth of equipment. The timely intervention of the prison police and the mediation of the ward commander, Gianluca Colella, averted a catastrophe.
Raffaele "Lello" Munno and Donato Vaia, respectively vice-secretary for Campania and delegate of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (Know), expressed their concern: "The prisoner had psychiatric problems. The situation was managed thanks to the prompt response of the prison officers and the commander's mediation."
The trade unionists also demonstrated "solidarity and closeness to the prison police officers of Secondigliano, already subjected to work-related stress due to overcrowding in the prison and heavy shifts, with overtime exceeding the limits.

Capece stressed the need to address the problem of prisoners with psychiatric problems: "SAPPE has been denouncing this critical issue for years. After the closure of the OPGs, many inmates with psychiatric problems were transferred back to prison, often perpetrating violent acts against prison officers. This problem must be addressed quickly, with adequate external facilities (the REMS are currently completely inadequate)."
The Sappe leader also highlighted the urgency of interventions to protect prison officers: "A strong and clear state presence is needed. The Department of Penitentiary Administration and the competent institutional bodies must take targeted actions to ensure the intervention of the prison police force."
In conclusion, the Sappe announced that it will evaluate every form of protection, including legal action, for colleagues who have been attacked and threatened, reiterating the importance of urgent and effective interventions to support prison officers, defined "pride not only of the Sappe and of the entire corps, but of the entire nation".
