A strong earthquake of magnitude 3.4 shook the Campi Flegrei at 3:58 this morning, startling the population. The shock, which occurred at a depth of 2.9 kilometers, had its epicenter in the sea facing the coast between Lucrino and Arco Felice.
This is the second earthquake in a few hours: yesterday evening, at 21:30 pm, a magnitude 1.8 shock was recorded in the gulf in front of the coast of Bacoli.
Yesterday a seismic swarm with 7 minor tremors with a maximum magnitude of 1.6.

The shock was also felt in Licola, Monterusciello, Cuma and in some neighborhoods of Naples such as Pianura, Bagnoli and Fuorigrotta.
A smell of sulfur in the area
In the hours preceding the earthquake, many residents between Pozzuoli and Bacoli had noticed a strong smell of sulfur.
Fear and concern among the people
On social media in the area between Cuma and Licola, many residents have expressed their fear and concern about the increasing seismicity: Many have reported roars and strange movements coming from the sea already yesterday afternoon.
Since the beginning of the year, the INGV's Naples unit has recorded 4.274 tremors in the Phlegraean Fields, most of which were very low magnitude. The situation is being constantly monitored by the INGV, which urges the public to stay informed and follow the authorities' instructions in case of emergency.
