Torre Annunziata. "Gays in the crematoriums": this shocking statement led to Carmine Alfano's dismissal from his position as a university professor and prompted him to withdraw from the mayoral runoff.
Alfano, the center-right candidate in Torre Annunziata, in the province of Naples, withdrew from the election after recordings, released by L'Espresso, showed him using derogatory terms during conversations with urology interns at the University of Salerno.
These recordings led to the revocation of his appointment by the University of Salerno.
In the afternoon, Alfano held a press conference to announce his withdrawal from the ballot, effectively leaving the center-left candidate, Corrado Cuccurullo, as the only contender and likely new mayor of Torre Annunziata.
In a note, the rector of the University of Salerno, Vincenzo Loia, expressed his thoughts on the matter: "I would like to express my thoughts to our university community and to all those who are following the story of the statements made by Professor Carmine Alfano.

My comments are not tied to formal documents or institutional actions already undertaken by the University: this is known information that will be further elaborated as procedural steps develop.
With this brief message, I wish to affirm that the University of Salerno is immune to a world of harassment, insults, and discrimination.
We work for young people, to ensure that they are not only able to find professional opportunities, but also to contribute to a better, more equitable, and more supportive society—a society that includes rather than excludes, that rewards rather than offends, that measures the expression of civility by respecting everyone, regardless of gender, ideology, or creed.
The rector concluded: "As rector, this is my only way of seeing our role, our mission, our sacrifices. The rest is a dark world that doesn't represent us."
