From July 26 to August 1, 2024, one of the most anticipated events of the summer season returns: the Ventotene Film Festival, conceived and directed by Loredana Commonara. Now in its twenty-ninth edition, the festival confirms its central role in the film scene of the smaller islands, bringing great cinema to a unique and evocative setting. This year, in addition to the usual tributes to illustrious filmmakers such as Massimo Troisi and Marcello Mastroianni, the event will offer a series of screenings, panels, and meetings dedicated to current issues such as environmental protection and European history, in celebration of the eightieth anniversary of the Ventotene Manifesto.
The Festival Sections
The 2024 Ventotene Film Festival returns with "Green Path," an international competition focusing on films and documentaries that address issues of ecology and planetary protection. The jury, chaired by renowned director and screenwriter Radu Mihaileanu, will evaluate works of great depth and relevance. The selected titles include the Italian premiere of "The Mediterranean Heroes" (France) by Thomas Capiten, "The Forest Maker" (Germany) by Volker Schlöndorff, "Abyss Clean Up" (Italy) by Igor D'India, "Cuba's Life Task: Combatting Climate Change" (UK) by Daniesky Acosta and Hugo Rivalta, and "The Plastic Hike" (Portugal) by Carolina Semrau and Augusto Lima. The "Open Frontiers Young" competition, coordinated by Professor Luigi Mantuano, also returns to promote short films made by young high school students. Among the titles: "Legàmi" by ISISS Teodosio Rossi, "Midaugust Run: story of an escape" by Giulio Tonelli, "Catene" by Anna Ciccioli and "Umbilicus" by Nello Correale.
Special events
Running from July 26th to August 1st, the Festival will offer a series of special events, including film screenings introduced by directors, actors, and screenwriters. The festival will open on July 26th with a screening of Paolo Virzì's "Un Altro Ferragosto," the sequel to the 1996 cult film "Ferie d'Agosto." Other notable titles include Matteo Garrone's "Io Capitano" and Neri Marcorè's "Zamora." In addition to the screenings, the Festival will pay tribute to two icons of Italian cinema, Marcello Mastroianni and Massimo Troisi, with screenings of films that are iconic to their careers.
Prizes and Awards
The festival confirms its international vocation with the Vento D'Europa - Wind of Europe International Award, established in 2011 and dedicated to Altiero Spinelli. This award recognizes international artists who represent continental culture. Over the years, the prize has been awarded to illustrious names in film, such as Paolo Sorrentino, Wim Wenders, and Matteo Garrone. The Julia Major Award celebrates prominent female figures in film, music, literature, and civil rights. The most recent award, the Earth, Wind, and Sea Award, is given to artists who raise awareness of the ecological crisis. New this year is the Open Frontiers Award, which honors works that promote integration and legality.
Collaborations and Support
The Ventotene Film Festival is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Ventotene and in collaboration with the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and the Libreria Ultima Spiaggia. Furthermore, it benefits from the partnership with Italy for Movies, the portal dedicated to Italian film locations, which provides useful information and incentives for productions. Ultimately, the Ventotene Film Festival confirms itself as an unmissable event for film enthusiasts, offering a mix of culture, entertainment and reflection on the most urgent issues of our time.
