A harsh judgement on the performance of the Italian national team at the 2024 European Championships comes from the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, who, in an interview with “Il Foglio”, described the Italian participation as “an objectively traumatic image”. “A national team that raises the white flag, putting on the field an unconditional surrender, is the manifesto of a problem that cannot continue to be hidden”, said Abodi, highlighting the need for radical change.
According to the minister, Italian football has some excellences, but it is also marked by numerous contradictions. Abodi called for a deep self-criticism and the assumption of responsibility by all the protagonists of the sector: “If someone makes a mistake and fails, there must be someone who takes responsibility for the mistake.”
The Sports Minister also suggested that the Serie A should adopt successful models such as the English Premier League to become more competitive, stressing the importance of having a greater role in the decision-making processes of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
Abodi: “Gravina like Macron, he chose early elections”
Regarding the early FIGC elections, scheduled for next November, Abodi criticized President Gravina's decision to proceed without a broad discussion in the Federal Council: “President Gravina deemed it sufficient, at this stage, to bring forward the election date without an appropriate and desirable discussion in the Federal Council. With due proportions, as French President Macron did”.
