The Minister of Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, commented on Italy's elimination from the European Championship during an interview with RTL 102.5, describing the event as a "moral surrender". Abodi, who experienced the disappointment in Berlin first-hand, highlighted how the defeat was not only sporting, but profoundly moral.
"I was in Berlin and I experienced firsthand the bitterness not of a defeat, because sport teaches you to lose, but the bitterness of a defeat. A moral surrender." said Abode, highlighting the lack of reaction from the players. "There was no reaction, there was no flash of those that are seen especially in difficult moments," the minister continued, highlighting the lack of moral strength that the blue shirt should inspire.
Abodi then criticized the players' attitude, incapable of taking responsibility for the defeat. "What surprised me was the search for responsibility from others," he has declared. "When faced with defeat, the first thing that must emerge is self-analysis, self-criticism. And we should start from there. It's too easy to look at the responsibilities or possible mistakes of others. Once again, sport teaches us to take responsibility directly."
