Josephine Nappa, Wife of Francesco “Sandokan” Schiavone, revealed in a hearing at the ongoing trial in Santa Maria Capua Vetere that she met her husband in prison in March 2024.
The meeting took place during a brief period in which Schiavone had begun collaborating with justice, which was later interrupted.
Nappa said she was able to speak freely with her husband for the first time in years, due to the restrictions imposed by the 41 bis regime to which Schiavone was subjected.
Nappa's admission was made during a discussion about the alleged Christmas and Easter gifts that Nicola Schiavone, a long-time associate of Sandokan and believed to be a long-time friend of the boss, allegedly gave to Nappa and his children. The woman stated that these gifts took place “up to a certain point and then they thinned out.”
Then, when asked specifically whether she had warned her husband of this, the woman said that since her husband was in prison under the 41bis regime and the conversations were recorded “I didn't tell him anything”, but he told him these circumstances last March when he met him in prison, and “on that occasion nobody listened to us”.
Defense lawyers' perplexity about the management of the informants
Nappa's statements have raised doubts among defense lawyers, who have underlined the “rather particular employee management” and the fact that Sandokan was also able to meet his son Emanuele Libero during the period of collaboration.
Emanuel Free, in fact, did not follow his father's choice to collaborate with justice, but instead attempted to reorganize the clan's illicit activities in Casal di Principe, and was then arrested. The trial was adjourned to September.
