During the night, the collapse of part of the Vela Celeste prompted an immediate evacuation of the building to assess safety conditions. The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, along with Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and regional officials, supervised the operations on site.
"Last night we were at Vela Celeste for an on-site assessment at the coordination and rescue center, where some priorities were established. The first was immediate evacuation, because it was necessary to verify the safety conditions of the entire building ," said di Bari.
The authorities have ordered immediate checks of the entire facility, which are still ongoing. At 12:30 today, the prefect will hold another meeting with all members of the Civil Protection Department, the mayor of Naples , and representatives of the Campania Region to review the situation. "If the outcome of the checks is favorable, or partially favorable, then people will gradually be allowed to return ," added di Bari.
