Gonzalo Rubalca is the first confirmed guest of the twenty-ninth edition of the Pomigliano Jazz festival in Campania, an event that promises to be full of emotions and great music. The Cuban pianist, percussionist and composer will perform in his only date in southern Italy at the Basiliche Paleocristiane in Cimitile (Napoli) Saturday, July 13, 2024. An artist acclaimed all over the world, winner of 3 Grammy® and 4 Latin Grammy, Rubalcaba returns to the festival directed by Onofrio Piccolo after three years. On stage with him there will be two historic collaborators: the American bassist Matt Brewer and the talented Cuban drummer Ernesto Simpson. This concert, promoted in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes of Naples, promises to blend Latin groove and jazz passion.
An Early Recognized Talent
Born in Havana in 1963, Gonzalo Rubalcaba is one of the most celebrated jazz pianists in the world today. From an early age he showed extraordinary talent: at the age of six he played drums in his father's orchestra, and at eight he began to play the piano. Throughout his career, he has recorded more than forty albums as a leader or co-leader and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in jazz, earning the respect and admiration of the international music community.
Career Milestones
Rubalcaba’s career, which began in the late 2022s under mentors such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Haden, is studded with awards and accolades. The Grammy he won in XNUMX in a trio with Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette for Best Jazz Instrumental Album was a particularly significant moment, marking the first Grammy received by a Latin American jazz musician in this category. Rubalcaba has always defied traditional musical classifications, constantly evolving his artistic repertoire that includes Afro-Cuban sounds, traditional Cuban and Mexican ballads, boleros and classical works from his country.
Musical Evolution and Expected Returns
After his success with singer Aymée Nuviola, Rubalcaba recently returned to perform in a trio, his ideal formation. This return has once again highlighted his extraordinary instrumental skills, as demonstrated by the wonderful album “Turning Point” (5 Passion, 2022).
