Grumo Nevano. A 77-year-old man from Acerra died yesterday morning while undergoing a CT scan with contrast medium at a diagnostic center in Grumo Nevano.
The rescue was prompt, but failed to save the man. The agents of the Frattamaggiore Police Station intervened on the spot and the Prosecutor's Office of Naples North has opened an investigation to ascertain the causes of death and any responsibilities.
The man's body was seized and transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine of the San Giuliano Hospital in Giugliano for an autopsy. The victim's family filed a complaint and are asking for clarification on what happened.
According to the investigators' reconstruction, the man was injected with the contrast liquid intravenously. Shortly after, he began to feel very ill and lost consciousness. The diagnostic center staff attempted to revive him, but without success.
The investigations will have to ascertain whether all the precautions required for this type of examination have been respected, such as premedication with anti-allergy drugs or the presence of an anesthetist in the room.
The diagnostic center expressed its condolences to the victim's family and stated its willingness to cooperate with the authorities.
This incident raises questions about the safety of contrast-enhanced CT scans, which, while generally safe, can in some cases cause serious allergic reactions. It is important that patients are informed of the risks associated with the test and that medical facilities take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
