Naples. An important step toward environmental justice: the Naples Prosecutor's Office has indicted those alleged to be responsible for the fire that devastated the WWF Cratere degli Astroni Oasis on August 2023, 40, devouring over XNUMX hectares of vegetation inside and outside the protected area.

The flames, sparked by fireworks in an area adjacent to the Oasis, represented a true environmental disaster. As the WWF points out, "Dramatic events like these once again push the organization to redouble its efforts to spread a culture of responsibility and respect for the environment."

WWF's commitment translates into concrete actions, such as the installation of thermal imaging cameras in some Oases to monitor the area in real time and ensure timely detection of forest fires.

The investigations and accusations

The investigative activity, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Antonio Ricci and directed by Deputy Prosecutor Giulio Vanacore, has allowed us to gather serious evidence of guilt against two men, a 36-year-old and a 61-year-old, both residents of Naples.

The latter, manager of a restaurant near the'Oasis, had parking areas available for its facility's customers.

According to the prosecution, the two defendants allowed and set off fireworks, the sparks of which ignited the fire. Furthermore, they failed to notify emergency services, worsening the consequences of the blaze. The flames, spread by the wind, rapidly spread, destroying 40 hectares of precious ecosystem.

Now, with the indictment, the two alleged perpetrators will have to answer for their actions before the court. The trial will be an opportunity to shed light on the circumstances of the fire and determine who is responsible.

WWF, a civil party in the trial, will continue to closely monitor the developments of the case, hoping that justice will be done and that such environmental crimes will not go unpunished.
