Naples. The trial against the former mayor of Marano, Mauro Bertini, accused of external complicity in mafia association and corruption, ended with a heavy sentence.

The judges of the court of Napoli North, after a trial that lasted over three and a half years, sentenced Bertini to 12 years and 6 months in prison.
Also sentenced to lighter terms were the building contractor Angelo Simeoli (3 years) and the brothers Aniello and Raffaele Cesaro (3 years each). Eduardo Pellecchia was acquitted.
According to the judges, Bertini had favoured the clans in the awarding of public contracts
The court, presided over by judge Eleonora Pacchiarini, recognized Bertini's role in the infiltration of the camorra in local public administration, in particular with regard to the awarding of construction contracts.
