Naples. A demonstration shook the panorama of Naples this morning. A large sign reading “For Sale” was posted on the facade of Castel dell'Ovo, a historic symbol of the city.
Article Key Points
The initiative, promoted by the Comitato Mare Libero Pulito e Gratuito Napoli and Napoli Libera, is part of the national mobilization “Presa della Battigia”.
The aim is to denounce the sell-off and privatization of public property and common goods, in particular the coast of Naples. “We climbed the castle that is the symbol of our city to send a clear message: enough with the sell-off of our sea!” – states the Committee’s press release.
The promoters of the initiative accuse the Meloni government and the Manfredi administration of pursuing policies that favor the privatization of the Bagnoli coast, through article 14 of the "DL Coesione".
Activists: “We are against the sell-off of our sea”
This article provides for funding of 1 billion and 200 million euros, but with the clause of being able to derogate from the laws in force on the restoration of the coastline.
“We want the sea to return to the people of Naples!” – activists claim. “From San Giovanni to Bagnoli, passing through Posillipo, the entire coast must become accessible, free and clean. We cannot allow our heritage to be sold off to private individuals for economic interests.”
The protest action at Castel dell'Ovo has put the spotlight on a very current issue and mobilized public opinion. The “Presa della Battigia” represents a warning to the institutions to take on the responsibility of protecting and enhancing public heritage, guaranteeing free and open access to the sea for all citizens.
