A wonderful discovery marked the dawn of today on the coast of Ischia: the first nest of the Caretta caretta sea turtle of the season was discovered along the Forio coastline, specifically at Impiccato beach, along the Chiaia promenade. The sea turtle laid her eggs between 4.30:6 and XNUMX:XNUMX a.m., providing a moment of joy and hope for marine biodiversity.
The nest area was promptly delimited by the coast guard, under the coordination of Lieutenant Antonio Magi, together with the staff of the marine protected area of the Kingdom of Nettuno. A team from Turtle Point of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Portici also intervened on site. The discovery was reported by some ecological operators on duty in the early hours of the morning.

This event represents the first Caretta caretta nest in Ischia since 2022, when a turtle laid its eggs in the bay of San Montano. "This is excellent news for the biodiversity of our sea, which also rewards the monitoring work of our marine protected area and which will undoubtedly help us, by publicizing a natural spectacle, to protect the beauty of our coasts and our sea." said Antonino Miccio, director of the Kingdom of Nettuno.
Miccio also emphasized the importance of citizens reporting, pointing to a growing awareness of nature. The eggs are expected to hatch 45 to 60 days after being laid. Volunteers and experts will monitor the nest, and any others that may be discovered, as part of the European Life Turtlenest project. This project, coordinated by Legambiente with the participation of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn and the Campania Region, aims to create an international network for the protection of Caretta caretta nests on the Mediterranean coasts of Italy, Spain, and France.
