BBC Napoli has allocated approximately €10 million to support the Italian nautical industry group Afina's project, which aims to transform the Mergellina coastline with a major project. The plan calls for extending the Mergellina outer breakwater by 250 meters, with the addition of six comb-shaped piers, each 100 meters long and spaced 50 meters apart.

This ambitious project aims to create 1.200 linear meters of mooring space, enough to accommodate between 350 and 400 new berths. Despite Afina's enthusiasm, the initiative has encountered some resistance. "The area where Afina wants to carry out the project is subject to restrictions and therefore the approval of the Superintendency is required to proceed.", said Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green-Left alliance.

Borrelli highlighted concerns about possible congestion of Mergellina: "We believe that the introduction of new berths would lead to total congestion in Mergellina, already heavily congested, both at sea and on land due to the transport of boats."

According to Borrelli, the Afina project, although aimed at giving new vigor to the economy and redeveloping the area, might be more appropriate in another location. "In San Giovanni a Teduccio, a project like this would be truly beneficial. It could revive the former tourist port, abandoned for years, and bring jobs and development to the neighborhood." Borrelli concluded, indicating a possible alternative that could better respond to local needs without compromising the already delicate balance of Mergellina.
