The trial of Carlo Marino and 13 other defendants for bid-rigging and waste trafficking has been adjourned until September 24.
The trial, initially opened at the court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, was suspended due to an exception of territorial jurisdiction raised by the defense.
The charges. The defendants, including the mayor of Caserta Charles Marino and the mayor of Curti Antonio Raiano, are accused of having rigged public tenders in the waste collection sector in several provinces of Campania.
At the centre of the process is the figure of Charles of Savoy, a waste entrepreneur considered by the DDA to be close to the Casalesi clan.
The exceptions. The lawyers of some defendants contest the jurisdiction of the court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, arguing that the crime of waste trafficking falls within the jurisdiction of the district and that the trial should therefore be held at the court of Napoli.
The issue had already been raised in the past, with the Naples court declaring itself incompetent and sending the documents to Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The Sammarinese judges will decide on the issue at the hearing on September 24.
The acquitted. Last year, the GUP of Naples had acquitted seven defendants in a summary trial, including the former councilor of Aversa Paolo Galluccio and the entrepreneur Michele Oliviero.
The investigations. The trial was born from an investigation by the Naples DDA and the Carabinieri of the Ecological Operations Unit (Noe), started in 2018 and resulting in six arrests in December 2021.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the entrepreneur Carlo Savoia, with the complicity of some mayors and public officials, allegedly "fixed" at least 44 tenders for waste management in various provinces of Campania.
The civil parties. The Municipalities of Caserta, Aversa and Curti have joined the trial as civil parties.
Upcoming dates. The next hearing in the case is set for September 24, when the judges will decide on the issue of territorial jurisdiction.
