Urban mobility enters a new era with TargaGo, the innovative app developed by Autostrade per l'Italia. Tested on the Naples ring road in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, this free app promises to revolutionize highway toll collection, making it faster, more efficient, and more sustainable.
TargaGo is designed to completely eliminate the need to stop at toll booths. The system relies on automatic license plate reading, allowing for dynamic toll payment via a rechargeable digital wallet. Drivers can use this service by downloading the app or registering on the Targago.it website. When driving through the "yellow" lanes dedicated to electronic toll collection, the system recognizes the license plate and automatically charges the toll, without having to stop.
During the first testing phase, supervised by the Federico II University of Naples, the system demonstrated its efficiency. With the start of the second phase, the project is now being extended to external service providers interested in the technology, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, AISCAT, and the regulatory authorities. TargaGo is currently available for Class 2 vehicles with Italian license plates, including cars, vans, and minibuses, while motorcycles and heavy goods vehicles are excluded.
Each user can register up to two license plates. Payments are made via a digital wallet that can be topped up with a credit, debit, or prepaid card. The system automatically alerts users when their remaining credit is running low, making the process even simpler and more intuitive.
TargaGo's main goal is to improve traffic flow and reduce environmental impact. "Once again, Naples and its city highway are at the center of a technological experiment.", declared Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. "This application will speed up toll booth passages, with significant environmental benefits as well."
Luigi Massa, CEO of tangential of Naples, underlined the importance of this innovation: "TargaGo is a new sustainable solution that complements other electronic payment methods that require a stop. It speeds up transit by eliminating queues at toll booths and thus reduces emissions."
The next stage of the trial could introduce the option to link a credit card directly to the app, eliminating the need for an electronic wallet and making payments even faster. In conclusion, TargaGo represents a significant innovation in the Italian mobility landscape, combining efficiency, sustainability, and technology to offer an improved experience to millions of drivers.
Downloading the app is free, and toll payments are processed automatically, with the option to monitor payments in real time directly from your smartphone. The service is available at all toll booths in the 20 dedicated electronic toll lanes marked with yellow signs.
