Trial postponed this week due to lawyers' strike.

The hearings in the major trial for the abuses in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison on April 6, 2020, have been suspended for three days due to the lawyers' absence. The lawyers complain that the hearings are excessively long (over eight hours twice a week), preventing them from adequately carrying out their duties.

The abstention, proclaimed by the Criminal Chamber of Santa Maria Capua Vetere chaired by Alberto Martucci, cancelled the hearings scheduled for today and Wednesday 3 July.

The reasons for the abstention:

Too long hearings: The hearings, which are held twice a week, last more than eight hours, putting a strain on the concentration of all parties involved.
Compromised Defense: The excessive length of hearings does not allow lawyers to dedicate the necessary time to studying the documents and preparing the defense.
Systematic running out of time: Hearings regularly end late, with negative consequences on the clarity and stamina of all participants.
Tensions in the courtroom: The climate in the courtroom is tense, especially between the victims and the defendants. In one of the hearings, a witness threatened a lawyer.
No agreement: Despite requests from lawyers to reduce the length of the hearings and end them at 16.30:XNUMX p.m., the court failed to reach an agreement.

Shorter hearings: Reduce the length of hearings to 5 hours.
More hearings per week: Increase the number of hearings per week to make up for lost time.
Hearing deadline: End hearings by 16.30:XNUMX p.m.
The process:

The defendants include 105 prison officers, Department of Penitentiary Administration officials, and doctors from the Caserta Local Health Authority.
Civil parties: Over 100.
Witnesses: 200 between prosecution and defense.
Lawyers: Over 150.
The violence:

On April 6, 2020, a group of prison police officers brutally beat inmates at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison during a riot.
The violence was captured on prison security cameras.
Videos of the violence have sparked horror and outrage across the country.
The trial is underway in the bunker courtroom of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison.

The next hearings are scheduled for July 4 and 5.

The situation is tense and the climate is heavy. It remains to be seen whether the parties will be able to find an agreement to allow the process to continue in a calm and regular manner.
