"Il peso del sangue," Vladimiro Bottone's new novel, published by Solferino, arrives at the Mondadori Bookstore in Castellammare di Stabia. Italy's controversial transition from Fascism to the Resistance unfolds in a sweeping historical narrative, blending thriller, mystery, noir, and the story of an unimaginable and "scandalous" love.
Event details
On Monday, July 15th, at 18.00:35 PM, at the Mondadori Bookstore (Strada Santa Maria dell'Orto, XNUMX), the author will meet readers and the public, in conversation with Tiziana Esposito and Maurizio Sorrentino. Readings will be provided by the Alegria Cultural Association, directed by Giulia Conte.
The Author
Vladimiro Bottone, Neapolitan by birth and Turinese by adoption, is the author of ten books and a contributor to the cultural pages of Corriere della Sera. He has also published, every Sunday for nine years, an unpublished story for Corriere del Mezzogiorno.
Plot of the Novel
"The Weight of Blood" illuminates how the Italian Republic's roots lie in the years of the Civil War following September 8, 1943. The novel describes Italy's dramatic experience between the Republic of Salò and the Resistance through an unexpected relationship: that between the Jew Myriam Pescarolo and the fascist police officer Troise.
The main characters
Set against the backdrop of Turin in 1944, the story unfolds of Myriam Pescarolo, a young Jewish woman who escaped deportation, and Troise, an OVRA official with a misunderstood sense of patriotism. Their initially contentious friendship evolves in unexpected ways, making their situation increasingly dangerous, especially with Myriam's connections to the Resistance.
Historical Insights
The novel doesn't just focus on the main characters. Prominent figures such as Guido Leto, former head of the OVRA and later Technical Director of the Police Schools of the newly formed Italian Republic, offer the reader the opportunity to reflect on the transition from Fascism to democratic Italy.
Narrative Style
"The Weight of Blood" displays formal perfection and cinematic pacing, lending the story a vivid, emotional, and realistic tone. It is a "National Fiction," an intense spy story, and a passionate love story.
