A week after his father, the repentant former boss Gioacchino Fontanella, his 26-year-old son Bruno Fontanella also ended up in prison for attempted extortion.
With him was also his 50-year-old accomplice Francesco Sorrentino, a man with no criminal record. The two were arrested by the Carabinieri on the orders of the Salerno DDA on charges of attempted extortion aggravated by the mafia method and purpose of having facilitated the Fontanella clan.
The Fontanella clan, precisely. The one that Gioacchino Fontanella, a former boss who collaborated with justice for a period, was trying to reorganize once he was released from prison.
The reins of the clan had been inherited from his cousin, the famous Catello Fontanella 'o biondono, the implacable killer of the Imparato clan who between the late 1980s and early 1990s had allowed himself the luxury of engaging in a feud with the powerful D'Alessandro clan of Castellammare and with the Abagnale-Rosanovas of Sant'Antonio Abate.
Gioacchino Fontanella's wife is also the cousin of the life-sentenced boss of Gragnano Nicola Carfora, also known as 'o fuoco at the time among the killers of the Imparato clan.
Boss and accomplice arrested last week
The measure stems from an investigation conducted by the Investigative Unit of Torre Annunziata, following the complaint filed by an entrepreneur in the transport sector of Sant'Antonio Abate, with a company in Scafati.
This is the second complaint in a few weeks against the group of the former killer of camorra who, after having collaborated with justice and served several life sentences, was released and – according to the Antimafia – attempted to reconstitute the Fontanella clan.
This clan had already been hit hard in recent years with the arrest of its cousin, the clan leader, Catello Fontanella, recently sentenced in the first instance to ten years of imprisonment.
“We need 250 thousand euros, we have already gone through Agostino Rispoli” It was the extortion request of the boss Gioacchino Fontanella who, to intimidate the victim – a transport entrepreneur – referred to another extortion attempt.
The victim – as reported by Il Mattino – promptly reported the incident to the Carabinieri, who had already started investigations into a previous case of extortion against the city councilor and father-in-law of the mayor of Sant'Antonio Abate, Ilaria Abagnale.
These two reports in a few days led to the dismantling of the new branch of the Fontanella clan, dedicated to extortion activities.
