Recent increases in raw materials could bring the price of coffee at the bar to almost 2 euros a cup in the coming months.

This is what he says Absolute users, responding to the alarm raised by producers in recent days. The price of robusta coffee has reached almost $4.600 per ton, a 79% increase compared to the same period in 2023, Assoutenti notes.

Robusta coffee is currently trading 68% higher, from 147 cents per pound on August 21, 2023 to the current 247 cents.

This growing trend could have a direct impact on consumers' budgets: espresso has already seen steady increases in recent years, so much so that today, according to the latest Assoutenti monitoring, the average price of a cup consumed at the bar has risen by 15% compared to 2021.

In some cities, prices have already reached 1,50 euros for an espresso, and new price increases could cause prices to skyrocket further in the coming weeks, as producers and venues will not be able to absorb the additional costs.

"In Italy, around 6 billion coffees are served each year in public places, generating a turnover of around 7 billion euros for the classic cup of espresso alone," explains President Gabriele Melluso.

"Any price increase would fall directly on consumers, increasing the cost of a daily ritual for millions of people. Furthermore, in some cities like Naples, we risk losing the tradition of 'suspended coffee,' which has always had enormous social and charitable value," concludes Melluso.
