The number of available positions for degree programs in healthcare professions in Italy is growing. For the next academic year, applications are expected to include approximately 35.900 positions for future nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, and, for the first time, osteopaths. This represents a 3,9% increase compared to the 34.450 positions available the previous year.

With the entrance exam set for September 5th at the 41 state universities, August is the deadline for submitting applications.

The deadline has already passed for 22 universities, including La Sapienza University of Rome. The next deadlines are for the Universities of Milan Bicocca, Brescia, Padua, Genoa, Naples Federico II, Florence, and Bari, among others, with dates between August 27 and 31.

Angelo Mastrillo, professor of Organization of Health Professions at the University of Bologna, emphasizes how private universities, such as the Catholic University, have also increased their available places, with 845 places on 12 courses spread across several regions. These courses are highly attractive, especially for certain professions.

In 2023, the ratio of applications to vacancies was particularly high for physiotherapists (6,8), speech therapists (4,7), midwives (4,3) and dieticians (3,7). The nursing sector was less competitive, with 20.000 vacancies offered, with a ratio of 1,1 applications per vacancy. The employment future for those who choose these professions is very promising. According to data from AlmaLaurea, the employment rate for graduates in healthcare professions is 77%, almost double the national average for other disciplinary areas.
