Argentine government in uproar: it celebrates left-handed footballers and deliberately forgets Maradona

The 'Diez' is untouchable. And above all its 'iconography' cannot be offended in any way by ignorance.

Even less so if the choice hides political motivations. In Argentina, controversy has arisen after the sensational gaffe of Manuel Adorni, spokesperson for the Argentine president Javier Milei, during a ceremony in which tribute was paid to the "great left-handers who contributed to the greatness of Argentina".

he made no mention of Maradona, who never hid, throughout his iconic and troubled existence, his left-wing sympathies.

When asked by journalists why the Argentine champion was not in the famous list of left-handed geniuses (cited as stars in the field of sport, such as Messi, Di María, Ginobili, "Maravilla" Martínez e villages) replied ironically: "Who? Oh, he was left-handed? Oh, yes, he was left-handed."

Many Argentines interpreted those words as 'sacrilegious,' also dictated by the political situation of the moment. If it had been an oversight, it would probably have ended there, but the Argentine newspapers themselves pointed out that having overlooked Maradona It was a deliberate choice, given that 'El Diez' is often immortalised with left-wing leaders (primarily Fidel Castro) is the furthest thing from the right-wing Milei who last year, supported by the La Libertad Avanza coalition, defeated the Peronist candidate Sergio Massa in the presidential elections.

Once the 'gaffe' was acknowledged, a hail of criticism quickly descended on Adorni and indirectly on Milei.

The daughter of the 'Pibe de Oro', Dalma Maradona, she referred bluntly to the presidential spokesman, comparing him to a “muppet”: "Adorni is a person who repeats what he has to say, he has no thoughts of his own, because he is someone's spokesman. And on top of that, he makes a poorly acted gaffe."

He also talked about it Gianinna, another of El Diez's daughters. She uploaded a photo of Adorni to her Instagram account and concluded with a very Maradonian quote: "Assholes are like ants, they're everywhere."

Osvaldo Ardiles, world champion with Argentina at the 1978 World Cup, joined Maradona's fierce defense: "I didn't know that Adorni is now a comedian," said the former midfielder of Huracán and Tottenham Hotspur, among other teams, on social media X.

"Dear boy, when this arrogant and presumptuous swindler has given the Argentines (and the world) a thousandth of what you have given, then I will be able to pronounce your name. After having washed my mouth thoroughly beforehand. Thinking about it, it is much better that I did not mention you..."

Another world champion like Hector Henry who, in spreading a video of Mexico '86, labeled Adorni 'the world champion of idiots': "Thank God you didn't mention the greatest of them all."

Maradona, a genius, undoubtedly a hero, certainly an aesthete, has become a social, cultural and political phenomenon since he passed away just under four years ago.

The key that made him a legend was his left foot. And not knowing this, or at least deliberately forgetting it for Argentina, regardless of political affiliation, is seen as an affront to his omnipotence.
